Basic body awareness therapy
The training is intended for practicing physiotherapists.
The purpose of the training: Enable students to apply Basic Body Awareness Therapy and Movement Quality principles, and use the Body Awareness Scale Interview and Motivation Analysis for person-centred therapy in moderate mental health care.
Main learning outcomes:
- understand theoretical background and the core phenomena of basic body awareness therapy (BBAT) and “Movement Quality” (MQ).
- implement BBAT theoretical and practical principles for personal and professional development and planning person-cantered therapy for person with moderate mental health problems.
- implement the Body Awareness Scale Interview and Motivation Analysis.
Training methods: Lectures, seminars, practical work, e-learning, independent parctice, self-practice, written tasks, discussions and guided debates.
The structure and capacity of the course (in academical hours):
- Auditory work items – 14 hrs
Introduction of the subject and preparation for practice. Basic Body Awareness Therapy. Historical roots and background. Preconditions for movement quality. BBAT and movement quality. Body Awareness Scale Interview and Motivation Analysis. Final roundtable discussion.
- Practical work items – 38 hrs
Movement awareness training: biomechanical, physiological, psycho-socio-cultural, and existential perspective. Movement guidance practice.
- Independent work items – 104 hrs
Movement awareness training with BBAT + training diary. Independent study with literature + short BBAT theory summary. Practice with Body Awareness Scale Interview (at least 6 interviews) written report about 1 person. Written report about personal training with reflection according to given literature

Requirements to complete the study, including the assesment methods and criteria:
Requirements: At the end of the course, students must submit a structured self-reflection, based on which the lecturer confirms that the learning outcomes have been achieved.
Assessment methods: Formative assessment (continuous assessment during activities), Structured self-reflection, Written report presenting outcome from Body Awareness Scale Interview. Discussion / guided debate.
Assessment criteria: The assignments are evaluated as "passed" and "not passed". If "not passed", students have approximately one week to update their work, resend it to the teacher, in order to have it re-evaluated for being accepted to be "passed".
Learning environment description:
The training takes place in classes that support adult learning. Contact education takes place in study rooms with standard equipment.
