Gait Analysis and Orthotic Management in Neurological Rehabilitation

The training is intended for physical therapists and final-year students.

Requirements to start studies: Knowledge anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics, neurorehabilitation.

The purpose of the training: The curriculum aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a comprehensive gait analysis, including assessing gait abnormalities and designing interventions to manage gait disorders.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the gait analysis course, students should be able to:

1. Understand the principles of human movement and biomechanics, including joint movements and the forces associated with gait in relation to each phase of the complete gait cycle.

2. Use a variety of tools and methods to effectively perform gait analysis in a clinical practice, including observation, video recording.

3. Independently collect and process gait analysis data from patients with an orthopaedic or neurological deficit.

4. The ability to assessment and identify type of gait disorder and pathologies, followed by analysis of gait data and interpretation of the results to identify specific problems associated with a person's gait pattern.

5. Develop a comprehensive physical therapy plan, goals and intervention to address gait disturbances and improve functionality.

6. Understand the different types of assistive devices available to improve gait and mobility.

Training methods:

Blended learning including lecture, demonstration methods for mastering theoretical knowledge with a further empirical method for gaining practical skills, including: video observation for gait analysis, synthesis, analysis and interpretation.

The structure and capacity of the course:

1. Contact work items (8 hours):

  • Review of normal and pathological gait kinematics and kinetics (2 h)
  • Upright motor control test and interpreting gait analysis results (2 h)
  • Problem-solving approach with applied case studies (2 h)
  • Planning, goal setting, interventions in physical therapy (2 h)

2. Independent work items (27 hours):

  • History of gait analysis (3 h)
  • Biomechanics of human posture – stability and postural control (6 h)
  • Ground reaction forces and vector (3 h)
  • Instrumental methods of gait analysis (5 h)
  • Evidence-based practice: gait analysis in neurological, orthopedic and lower limb amputation patients (10 h)

Independent study materials will be sent to participants prior to the training, and should be reviewed before the course begins.

Study materials/literature used: Handout.

Requirements to complete the study, including the assesment methods and criteria:

The course is graded A, B, C, D, E, FX or F.

Successful completion of the course is a test exam with a minimum grade «Е».
